ABOUT BROAD RIPPLE
Broad Ripple Village is a Midtown Indianapolis neighborhood located six miles north of downtown, bounded by the White River, Keystone Ave, Kessler Blvd, and Meridian Street.
Situated in Washington Township, Marion County, it is one of seven areas designated as cultural districts in Indy.
|
Broad Ripple History: the area was platted in April 1837 and named "Broad Ripple", apparently as a tribute to the ripples created by the White River as it flowed over rocks. It was incorporated as the Town of Broad Ripple in 1894 and annexed to the City of Indianapolis in 1922.
In early days, it was considered a "suburb" vacation spot for downtown dwellers, including a grand, bygone amusement park located at Broad Ripple Park. By mid-century more residents arrived with an influx of homes and infrastructure. The second half of the 20th century saw Broad Ripple welcoming small-scale stores and music venues that earned the neighborhood its "village" counterculture and nightlife reputation. |
Today, Broad Ripple is popular for its welcoming blend of urban ammenities and outdoor access in a socially, economically, and ethnically diverse neighborhood. Residents and visitiors can patronize an eclectic mix of local and nationally recognized shopping, markets, bakeries, restaurants, bars, breweries, salons, health and wellness spas alongside galleries at the Indianapolis Art Center, exercise on The Monon Trail, and water sports on the White River.
Families with kids will enjoy delicious ice-cream shops, ducks along the Canal, and recreation at Broad Ripple Park Family Center, Dan Wakefield Park, or Opti-Park. There are also many acclaimed childcare and educational choices in or adjacent to the neighborhood:
